Serving Our Members in 2019
A Message from Our President
Jun. 27, 2018
No matter how you get health coverage - through an employer, the individual market, or a government program - we will continue to work with the entire health care system on ways to make health care more affordable.
Health care continues to cost more, so insurance and out-of-pocket costs are rising for nearly everyone. Many people in Montana struggle to pay for their health insurance, and sadly, more than 70,000 in our state had little choice but to go without it last year.
These costs have a larger impact on those who buy coverage in the individual market, especially if they don't qualify for federal assistance. That's because the individual market is still changing. Changes in government regulations-the rules by which we must operate-make it difficult to price our products.
It's important that we find the right balance of consumer affordability and market certainty so premiums don't vary a great deal from year to year.
While others sit on the sidelines or offer few options, we want to expand access to broad coverage regardless of health status because it's the right thing to do.
This year, Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Montana is proud to remain in the individual market with statewide options across all 56 Montana counties. For our 2019 plans, we continue to do everything possible to make access to care more affordable. But, we know health coverage will remain out of reach for many.
That's why we are dedicated to making care and coverage more affordable for all by addressing the root causes of excessive and unnecessary costs system through our Affordability Cures endeavor.
With new technology, we will help reduce variations in care and medically unnecessary outpatient services. We're reaching more people by focusing on increasing access, while also improving health literacy. And we're seeing positive results from helping members understand where best to go for care for their different needs.
We're addressing the opioid crisis, including helping our members safely dispose of unused or unwanted medication through the Walgreens Safe Medication Disposal Program. Hunger and food insecurity remain an issue in Montana which is why in 2017 our funding provided 2,965 meals to local families and we're planning on expanding our contributions across the state.
We know health care coverage means more than just "having insurance." That's why we're committed to investing in solutions that will lead to a long-term and affordable path for your health.
Thank you for trusting us with your health care coverage needs.
Dr. Monica Berner
President, Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Montana
