Supporting neighbors through volunteerism and charitable giving is an important part of BCBSMT's corporate citizenship. It’s what we call Blue Corps – activating employees to participate in the communities where we live, work and play. Giving back to Montana communities is an extension of our commitment to build lasting relationships with our members and health care providers.

In 2016, Blue Corps employee volunteers committed more than 7,000 hours to help community partners build a playground, assemble care packages for our military troops and set the ground work for a community garden, among many other endeavors. BCBSMT employees also invested in their communities’ needs by contributing generously to BCBSMT’s charitable giving campaign. In 2016, employees donated $30,668 to several nonprofit organizations including United Way and Montana Shares.

Blue Corps Volunteer Highlights

KaBOOM! Playground

Each year, BCBSMT teams up with KaBOOM!, a national nonprofit dedicated to building playgrounds and increasing the physical activity levels of children. In 2017, BCBSMT, in partnership with Great Falls Parks and Recreation, built a new playground, impacting hundreds of children and families. The Great Falls project at West Bank Park was the fourth of its kind in Montana. In 2014, volunteers helped transform a park in East Helena, in 2015, we built a playground in Billings, and in 2016, we partnered with St. Ignatius Schools.

Governor’s Cup and Kids Marathon

BCBSMT is the long-standing sponsor and organizer of the Governor’s Cup, Montana’s premier running event for more than 40 years. About 3,500 people annually participate, including more than 1,500 elementary who participate in the Kid’s Marathon, a program designed to inspire Montana’s kids to be active in a fun and rewarding group environment. Many BCBSMT employees volunteer during the two-day event to ensure it is a continued success.

Volunteer of the Year

BCBSMT’s 2016 Volunteer of the Year was Dave Sedlock – who registered a whopping 327 hours of service. Dave is a dedicated employee for sure, but more importantly, he is a mentor. He is the president of Blue Thunder, a Helena-based traveling softball team, which BCBSMT sponsors. Blue Thunder fields 12-, 14-, and 16-and-under teams. This group of girls has seen success on the field, and in their personal lives, in no small part to Dave’s guidance.
